First you will need to download an IRC client such as
mIRC. It is freeware, so even after the trial expires, you can keep using it. Also, I would suggest using the
NoNameScript addon for mIRC. It has too many features to list, so I'll just leave it at that.
Now, onto the actual tutorial:
In mIRC, you will need be asked to edit a few things, such as your servers, ident, etc. For now, you will only need to worry about your nickname. Self-explanatory.
Next, you will need to type this in the chat area:
/server irc.lcirc.net - This will connect you to the IRC server our channel is hosted on.
Now, you will need to register your nick. It is optional, but recommended, so people don't steal your nick. Do this by typing in the following command:
/msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email(optional)> - To identify yourself type:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY <password>To join the chan, type:
/join #mathacks
Extra Info
Ranks:
~ = Has "founder" access to the channel, you will only see myself, or rahlzel with this by our names.
& = Is a channel operator and is protected by our set of IRC channel services.
@ = Is a channel operator but is not protected by our set of IRC channel services.
% = Is a "halfop", meaning half-operator. These users can kick and ban users, but not set channel modes.
+ = Is a "voice", immune to channel protections, cannot kick or ban.
Those symbols are listed here respectivley from highest to lowest level of power in the channel and will be listed as such in your nick list.
Bans usually only last a few minutes and are cleared regularly, so you get plenty of chances to not be stupid. If you're known to cause trouble, you will be blacklisted, and the ban will not be removed. 4chan shit results in an instant ban.
