I didn't make any changes whatsoever. Everything was working fine until this error kept coming up whenever I try join a server. So I'm guessing there might have been an update. I have no plug-ins there is nothing in addons folder. What's going on? How do you fix this?

Browse to your cfg folder and open "valve.rc" in Notepad. See if there are any lines with the "plugin_load" command in them.

Check your autoexec.cfg for the command if there is not one delete your addons folder

I can't find autoexec.cfg in cfg folder I searched entire Left 4 Dead 2 directory all that's coming up is autoexec.360.cfg

Deleted addons folder, didn't work. I think I'm going to have to do a clean install of windows and reinstall the bloody game!

i had the same error (no steam l4d2) ..
there is only one solution for this problem..make a link and add -steam in your start config..
like this

F:\++Games\L4D2\left4dead2.exe -steam -console -novid -nohltv -nojoy -lv

Doesn't modifying engine.dll get you vac'd?

I ended up reinstalling windows and reinstalling the game altogether... system needed a shower anyway

I have fixed it. i think..
Go to L4D2 Properties - Then go to target and type "-steam" After left4dead2.exe" and this should work. If you play trough Garena then type in "-steam" in bootstrap parameters.

If you want a more detailed description then look up "L4D2 Non steam guide" in your L4D2 folder. Look at what is coming up and under "Quick start" there is a link to click on. I hope this works for all.
